Vostok 1 was the first spaceflight of the Vostok program and the first human spaceflight in history. 3KA Vostok spacecraft was launched on 12 April 1961 and it took to space Yuri Gagarin, a cosmonaut from the Soviet Union. This flight marked the first entrance of a man in outer space and the first orbital flight of a manned vehicle. Vostok 1 was launched by the Soviet space program and was designed by Soviet engineers, coordinated by Sergey Korolyov.

The Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru Dorin Prunariu was awarded Tuesday, 12 April 2011, by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev during a ceremony held in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first human flight into space.

Mr. Virgiliu Pop, researcher at the Romanian Space Agency, received the first prize for best paper and presentation at the International Symposium on Asteroid Mitigation and Exploration. The symposium held between 4-6 April at Station College, USA, and it was hosted by Texas A & M University, bringing together international experts in the fields of space exploration and Earth defense against potential threats coming from asteroids.
