Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, member of the Board of Directors of the World Space Week Association

on 18 November 2020

Dr. Phys. Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) became a member of the Board of Directors of the World Space Week Association. Romania is also represented in the board by Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, Honorary President of ROSA.

The association supports the United Nations in the organising of the World Space Week (WSW), an international celebration of science and technology.

World Space Week consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. In 2020, the theme was “Satellites Improve Life”.

The World Space Week is celebrated since 1999, when the General Assembly of the United Nations declared that event would be held each year during the same period: 4 – 10 October, since these dates commemorate two events: 4 October 1957 — launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration and 10 October 1967 — the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.

The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) is the institution promoting the campaign in Romania.
