The monitoring of floods on Prut river, using satellite data

on 30 June 2020

On 26 June 2020, the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management issued a code red for the Prut river basin, more precisely the Stânca Costești reservoir sector (Botoșani county). According to measurements on Rădăuți Prut, the level has surpassed the Danger Level with 266cm. The flood was formed on the superior basin of Prut, in Ukraine.

Considering that the floods affect a transfrontalier area — Ukraine, Moldova and Romania — the members of the team that support the activity of the Regional Support Office UN-SPIDER- RSO Romania got involved in the support of the specific monitoring activities.

In this context, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) monitors the flooded areas using Earth Observation data provided by Sentinel-1. The red code warns of the risk of major floods, the evacuation of people and property and restrictions on the use of bridges and transport routes.
