App developers from across Europe are invited to apply for Space App Camp 2015

on 05 June 2015

Professional app developers from across Europe are invited to apply for the 2015 Space App Camp organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) in order to create awareness for the possibilities offered by the European Earth Observation Programme Copernicus - Global Monitoring for Environment and Security. Following the registration deadline on 22 July, ESA will select 20 developers to attend the 4th edition of the event, which will take place on 14–21 September at ESA’s ESRIN centre in Frascati, Italy.

The goal of the App Camp is to make the amounts of data coming from Earth-observing satellites accessible to a wide range of citizens by producing mobile apps using this data on smartphones. In doing so, it focuses on leveraging the possibilities offered by the Copernicus programme, which recently became operational with the launch of the first Sentinel satellite in April 2014.

During the week-long camp, attendees will be asked to find creative answers to global challenges, will learn about the many ways satellite data can be used in mobile apps, make contacts all over Europe, and gain insights into how ESA operates.

ESA will provide access to satellite data for the development of mobile applications (Android and iOS) in five predefined categories. Participants can apply either alone or in teams of two, three, or four, but in the end all selected candidates will be grouped into teams of four. The participants will be able to choose their preferred category between:

  • Agriculture
  • Emergency and Rescue Management
  • Environmental Protection
  • Maritime Environment and Maritime Transportation
  • Lifestyle and Tourism

Candidates need to have proven experience in app development, therefore links to published apps incl. reference to the applicant need to be included in the application. The online application form available here needs to be filled in completely in English language and submitted before 11:00 a.m. Romania time on 22 July 2015.

Selection will be based upon the creativity shown in previous apps with regards to content, usability, design and business concept. Where candidates appear equally qualified, candidates from under-represented countries will have priority. Apart from personal details and previous experience, candidates shall state for which app category they would like to apply and why.

One winning team will be selected after the final presentation of the app on the last day of the App Camp by a jury consisting of ESA representatives. The members of the winning team will receive a cash prize worth 2 500 EUR.
Anyone who is looking for a team can join the dedicated LinkedIn group available here, where partners for application can be found.

The Space App Camp is organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) on behalf of the European Space Agency.
