Bucharest will host Sunday, 8 May 2011, an opened doors conference on planetary defense against asteroid and comet impacts. The Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart, the only Romanian cosmonaut, Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, the CEO of the Romanian Space Agency, Marius-Ioan Piso and Bill Ailor from the Aerospace Corporation will discuss the future of planetary defense, and how dangerous are these near Earth objects.


Hollywood often presents scenes in which humanity is threatened by an asteroid impact, but scientific truths which are hidden behind these scenarios? The conference "The Future of Planetary Defense" gives city residents the opportunity to learn more about the chances of a collision, about the detection systems that are being built today and the alert methods available if a hazard impact occurs.

The event takes place in the building of the Rector of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest and it is addressed to all those interested in learning accurate and objective information about the threat represented by asteroids and comets which have a close to the Earth trajectory. The participation is for free. The conference is organized by the Space Generation Advisory Council in collaboration with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Planetary Defense Conference, University Politehnica of Bucharest and Euroavia.
