The largest international hackaton, NASA Space Apps Challenge 2017, returns to Romania

on 20 April 2017

The largest hackathon held at an international level, NASA Space Apps Challenge, will take place on 29 – 30 April 2017. The event is organised for the first time in Bucharest and Timisoara, while Cluj-Napoca will host its second edition. The Honorary President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, will participate as a special guest at the Bucharest pre-event.


The competition is addressed to a large audience, with a wide range of expertise, working in different fields: pupils, students, programmers, scientists, professors, technologists, artists, designers, engineers, storytellers or entrepreneurs.

The main themes of this year’s competition, as established by NASA, refer to our planet: The Earth and Us, Planetary Blues, Warning! Danger Ahead!, Our Ecological Neighbourhood, Ideate and Create!. The challenges available for each category are available on the official website of the competition.

The participants can choose an issue they want to solve depending on the field, difficulty range and interests. Also, the participants can choose the location where they want to participate at the hackathon, and the registration is free of charge.

Pre-events will be held on 20 and 21 April with the purpose to familiarise participants with the hackathon notion, the NASA data sets and tools, problem solving concepts and skills, but also to provide them the opportunity to interact and get to know each other.

The special guest of the Bucharest pre-event is Dumitru Dorin Prunariu, the first and only Romanian cosmonaut.

After the hackathon, which will last 48 hours (29 – 30 April), the local juries will select maximum two projects for each participant city. The selected projects will be sent for further evaluation to an international jury, alongside with the project that was the most popular. The winners will be invited at a NASA launch.

NASA Space Apps Challenge represents a common collaboration effort at a national level of the following: ClujHUB, Coworking Timisoara, RICAP, SprintPoint Techcelerator, TechFest, Timisoara Startup Hub.
