Develop and test miniaturised measurement techniques applicable to flows in reduced gravity. Accurate detection of free-surfaces and of volumes of gas and liquids present in a component (tank, pipe,...) requires Improvements in ground and flight sensors. Presently ESA is initiating a GSTP activity on developing mathematical models to describe the behaviour of the fluid under microgravity conditions which could benefit of the here proposed activity and vise-versa for future validation activities. Here it is proposed to investigate other techniques than the usual ones emphasising particularly on the methods developed in medicine and on promising ultrasound methods that are under development in other engineering fields.

Another point is the interest of innovative non-intrusive techniques. The presence of a probe in a flow has always some disturbing effects on the flow-field. The application of holographic interferometry to aerospace application the last years has shown the capabilities of these methods. However, the extraction of 3D mappingof the flow-field is not simple and another issue is to evaluate the existing mapping methods. Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs). For additional information please go to EMITS news (dated 05/02/2001) "IndustrialPolicy measures for non-primes, SMEs and R&D entities in ESA programmes".
